| Transseptal Cryoablation of a Left-Sided Accessory Pathway Guided by a Novel Three-Dimensional Navigation System

Dec-Feb 2002, 3(4):7-7A 39-year-old man presented with regular narrow complex tachycardia for electyrophysiology (EP) study and transcatheter ablation. EP study revealed the existence of a left lateral concealed accessory pathway. A transseptal cryothermal ablation was undertaken, after puncture of the interatrial septum.
The accessory pathway was mapped and successfully ablated using cryothermy and a novel 3D navigation system (LocaLisa, Medtronic), which provides a unique option of localizing electrophysiologically important reference structures as well as mapping and ablation sites. Using advanced imaging, technology efficacy of such ablations can significantly be improved. |

| New Ideas About Atrial Fibrillation 50 Years On

Dec-Feb 2002, 3(4):5-5The "edge-to-edge" is a relatively new technique to treat mitral regurgitation. First introduced in 1991, it has been widely used in patients with severe mitral regurgitation due to complex lesions requiring demanding surgical techniques for correction or with expected low chances of successful repair. This alternative surgical approach consists of anchoring the free edge of the diseased leaflet to the corresponding edge of the opposing leaflet. Because of its effectiveness and durability, the "edge-to-edge" technique can be a useful addition to the surgical armamentarium in mitral valve reconstruction. Indications, results, controversies and future perspectives of this type of repair are discussed. |
