The annual meeting of GHA was held on April 10-12, 2007 in Kuwait at the Marina Hotel. The opening ceremony was very well attended, and was highlighted by a special address by his Excellency Mr. Mohammed J. Al-Khurafi, the head of the Kuwaiti Parliament. The President of GHA, Dr. Hajar A. Hajar Albinali gave an interesting opening speech in which he recounted some of his high school memories in Kuwait using some fine poetry and fascinating pictures of Kuwait in the 1960s.
Over a span of two busy days, internationally renowned speakers gave several important lectures. The exhibit was also very well attended and supported.
The remarkable generosity of Kuwait was particularly demonstrated by the abundance of some very fine food during lunch, dinner, and coffee break buffets. Every body expressed their delight with the great food and fine hospitality.
The GHA Directors held their general annual meeting on April 11th, 2007 and discussed the following issues:
1 - GHA web site: It was decided that Dr. Kazem Sulaiman of Oman will work on developing the web site.
2 - Gulf Registry: The successful effort to start Gulf Heart Registry presented at the meeting as Gulf Race 2006 was well appreciated. The sub-committee which started this fine work will continue its efforts to further develop this registry. However, Dr. Mohammad Zubaid asked to be excused from the committee because of other personal commitments. Dr. Khaled Al-Habib will replace him as head of the committee.
3 - GHA Guidelines: The association has already produced 3 guideline booklets about: Myocardial infarction, unstable angina, and DVT. It was decided to work on producing two more guidelines about: Peripheral vascular diseases, and Hypertension.
4 - Conferences: The Directors recommended that:
Lectures should not exceed 30 minutes.Encourage participation of member's countries.Deposit some of the commercial companies' contributions in GHA account. 5 - GHA meeting in Yemen: It was decided to hold the next GHA annual meeting in Sana'a on April 9-11, 2008, and to be headed by Dr. Ahmad Al-Motareb. The meeting will encourage Gulf countries participation.
6 - Formation of "Gulf Committee for Meetings": It was decided to form a permanent committee to organize meetings to be composed of one member of each Gulf country, to meet once or twice before every meeting, to plan the meeting, its program, and the decision about invited speakers. The nominated members are : Dr. Hani Najm of KSA, Dr. Omar Al-Tamimi of Qatar, Dr. Ahmad Al-Motareb of Yemen, Dr. Kazem Sulaiman of Oman, Dr. Khaled Al-Merri of Kuwait, Dr. Ibrahim Rashdan of Kuwait, Dr. Fouad Abdel Kader of Bahrain, and Dr. Wael Al-Mahmeed of UAE. The Chairman of this committee will be the one assigned for each GHA annual meeting according to the hosting country. Mr. Jassim Fakhro will attend the meetings of this committee as media communication organizer.
7 - The future annual meetings of GHA were decided as follows:

2007 in Jeddah2008 in Kuwait2009 in Qatar 8 - Heart Views: It was decided that Dr. Ibrahim Rashdan of Kuwait and Dr. Mohammad Arafa of KSA will try to register Heart Views, the GHA scientific journal, in the American National Library of Medicine. The continuous scientific contributions of Dr. Ahmad Al-Motareb of Yemen, and the Omani members were particularly appreciated.
9 - Subspecialty cooperation: GHA directors welcomed the cooperation between the association and the Arab Council of Medical Specialties to establish new Arab Board training programs in Cardiac Surgery and in Pediatric Cardiology. A committee was formed to follow up the Cardiothoracic Surgery program with the following members: Dr. Hani Najm of KSA, Dr. Habib Al-Tarif of Bahrain, Dr. Zuhair Al-Halees of KSA, and Dr. Abdel Wahed Al-Mulla of Qatar. Another committee was formed to follow the Pediatric Cardiology program with the following members: Dr. Riyad Abu Sulaiman, Dr. Ismail Reda, Dr. Mustafa Al-Kabandi, and Dr. Salem Al-Meskari.
It was decided to establish 2 subcommittees to further develop these programs and present them at the November meeting of the GHA in Jeddah for final approval and submission to the Council of the Arab Board of Medical Specializations.
The GHA will continue to function as non-governmental advisory body, to give professional advice to the Arab Board programs, and to develop new ideas in all aspects of education and care of patients in the field of heart diseases.
