A Flor de Piel

Artist: Doris Salcedo, created 2013

Medium: Rose Petals and Thread

Dimensions: 340 × 500 cm

The above art is made entirely of rose petals that have been treated and preserved. The petals have been sutured together by hand. It was created by Doris Salcedo, a Colombian artist. The piece was created in Colombia, South America, and is a by-product of Salcedo's research into the story of a nurse in Colombia who, after overcoming great obstacles in her life, was kidnapped and tortured to death. It is described by the artist as a “shroud”. She called her work A Flor de Piel, an idiomatic Spanish proverb similar to the English expression of “wearing one's heart on one's sleeve.” Literally, it means “like the flower of skin”; it means “with extreme emotion” or “to be overcome by emotion”. According to the artist, A Flor de Piel started with the simple intention to perform the funerary ritual that was denied to the nurse. The way the piece has been created is deeply evocative of a beautiful and eternal flower offering to those who pass away.

We witness death a lot in medicine and it is refreshing to find an artist who is a flor de piel.
